The Boss and My Book's Target Audience
When I began the journey with the publisher for my first book, Beneath Broken Machines, I as asked to begin answering some questions in order to help promote and market the book.
What sort of books might be similar to your book?
What genres will this book fall into?
What are keywords for searching?
What is an 'elevator pitch' for your book?
There is one question that is especially helpful: "What is your target audience?" Of all the questions, this one is pretty easy. I have a stream of people who will gravitate to my book, but for the sake of this space, let me just say I received great help from Bruce Springsteen as it relates to defining a significant portion of my target audience.
In his song, Land of Hope and Dreams, he articulates it greatly when he describes who 'this train carries'. Allow me to describe my target audience with the help of The Boss.
You'll need a good companion
For this part of the ride
Leave behind your sorrows
Let this day be the last
Tomorrow there'll be sunshine
And all this darkness past
This book is for saints and sinners
This book is for losers and winners
This book is for whores and gamblers
This book is for lost souls
This book will not be thwarted
This book, faith will be rewarded
This book, hear the words singin'
This book of freedom ringin'
This book is for lost souls
This book is for broken-hearted
This book for thieves and sweet souls departed
This book is for fools and kings
